WHO OWNS BRITAIN?
26/04/22
In 1982 Pope John Paul II visited Britain. The minute he arrived at Gatwick he kissed the ground, a gesture which had great historic significance. A crowd of 80,000 gathered for mass at Wembley Stadium, clapping and singing ‘he’s got the whole world in his hands’.
This was the first papal visit to this land in centuries. He made a point of kneeling in silent prayer at the spot of Thomas a Becket’s martyrdom. Just after Christmas in the year 1170, Becket had been despatched by King Henry II’s knights. Both Henry and John were kings who defied Rome, but after being excommunicated, John capitulated, signing a charter in 1213, a concession of England and Ireland to the Vatican. Within it were the following words:
‘we …... through this our charter, furnished with our seal, …. wishing to humiliate ourselves… do offer and freely concede to God and his holy apostles Peter and Paul and to our mother the holy Roman church and to our Lord Pope Innocent and his catholic successors, the whole kingdom of England and the whole kingdom of Ireland, with all their rights and appurtenances ….’
John went on to swear fealty and establish perpetual obligation to Rome. He bound his successors not to break the terms of the charter. If they did, any rights to the kingdom would be lost. John sealed the charter in the house of the Knights Templars near Dover, placing the crown at the feet of the pope’s legate. England and Ireland, now mere vassals to the chief pontiff, had to be rented back from Rome for a fee. When, later, the barons could not afford the increased taxes, John was forced into agreeing to the Magna Carta in 1215 and thereby enshrined the concept of ‘no taxation without representation’. This meant the terms of the earlier charter had been broken. So the crown was now legally and permanently in the hands of the papacy.
When we refer to the crown today, is it really the crown of the Templars? Their successors today are the Knights of Malta, a military papal order. This has a supposedly protestant ecumenical branch, The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, for which the queen is sovereign. The regalia, however, is marked by the maltese cross and the queen is subservient to the Grand Master of the Order of Malta. The actual relationship between the Holy See and the Order of Malta is not clear. They are both supposed to be special cases subject to international law, not actual countries. But the knights and dames are required to obey the pope.
Prince Charles’ coat of arms has the eldest son label round the neck of both the lion and unicorn. This is ‘three points argent’ which represent three parallel horns plucked out by the roots and turned upside down. His order of the Garter motto has the words Honi Soit Qui Mal y pense ‘shame upon him who thinks evil of it’. Underneath is a crown with three ostrich feathers and the red dragon, ancient symbol of Rome and part of the Vatican crest. Otherwise known as the beast in Revelation. Under the dragon lie the words ‘Ich Dien’, meaning ‘I Serve’. Right at the top decorating the coronet is a maltese cross over an orb or globe. So who does Charles serve?
When Pope John Paul II claimed the ground of Britain with a kiss, to the background of ‘he’s got the whole world in his hands’ maybe the lyrics weren’t that far wrong.
